wood, dull patina, standing on a raised plinth, long, narrow torso, free worked, long arms, rounded shoulders, expressive face with remains of sacrificial traces, min. dam., cracks, signs of abrasion, on wooden base; probably made by Angoram people from the Kanduonum village area near the Yuat river; such statues were made to commemorate especially venerated ancestors, and were often conceived as portraits

Papua New Guinea - Ramu River
wood, painted in red, black, white and yellow ochre, rising from a conical-shaped base, free carved arms, both hands resting aside the upper legs, a big head tapering to the top, surmounted by a chameleon, big slanting eyes and a long beak-like nose reaching up to the navel, the figure is dyed in red, face and "beak" are accentuated by yellow ochre, in black and white painted lines and ornaments, slightly damaged, cracks, paint rubbed off, on base; the "beak-style" is characteristic for figures of the lower sepik and refers to the close connection between man and bird. The sepik people look upon the bird as being responsible to transport the soul of men into the other world ("soul bird").

Papua New Guinea - Lower Sepik
wood, dull blackish-brown patina, red paint, free carved thin legs are supporting an elongated trunk with narrow (contracted) shoulders and with the arms carved close to the body, both hands are resting aside the abdomen, a loincloth of different coloured grass fibre around the hips, a neckless head with a shield-shaped flattened facial plane which is dominated by a huge arrow-shaped nose, a conical-shaped coiffure on top, slightly dam., cracks, paint rubbed off; expressive work, depiction of a mythical ancestor
