Papua New Guinea - Middle Sepik
wood, dull middle-brown patina, painted in black with curvilinear ornaments, extremely narrow and elongated in form, rising to a raised middle ridge, the eyes inset with conus discs, a curved nose with a bow-shaped prolongation turning into a stylized birds head at the chin, coiffure of human hair, on both sides and at the forehead originally decorated with nassa and cowrie snails, which were stuck into a reddish brown clay-like mass, slightly dam., crack (right hand side of the face), missing parts; this mask type represents an ancestor who is looked upon as the builder of Tambaran Houses. Thus it was used when a new house was build to bring good luck to its inhabitants.
