wood, spotty patina, paint residues, fur, of rounded form, beneath curved brows a whitened eye-zone with slanted, bean-shaped slit eyes, inbetween a small, straight nose with drilled nostrils, an oval, opened mouth with an affixed fur beard beneath, at eye level small ears reminding of an animal, whole facial plane covered with dots, pierced around the rim, min. dam., insect caused damage, missing part, cracks; the rounder face may, more than other masks, refer to the deceased "kindi" (cult of the skull). "Kindi" is the highest rank of the "bwami" society.

bone, flattened, in the shape of a reversed triangle, crowned by horns, pierced bean-shaped eyes are flanking a narrow nose, pierced around the rim, fine used patina; "lukungu" masks belong to members of "bwami"-society who already have reached the highest rank of kindi. "Lukungu" means "skull" and should be a hint that the mask is thought to remind of deceased "kindi" members.

ivory (hippopotamus), in the shape of a female half figure, a cylindrical body with reliefed arms, both hands resting on the breasts, typical circle ornament with a point in the center, accentuated by dark brown pigment, rubbed into the deepenings, pierced for attachment; because of magical energy "bwanga" each figure had a special protective effect for it´s owner. They protected him of various danger, such as illness, enchantment, misfortune. Aside of amulets made of ivory there are amulet figures made of wood.

wood, dull shining dark brown patina with residues of black paint, a kneeling female figure rising from a circular vaulted base, with it´s head and both hands supporting the seat; the tube-like bent legs carved in relief; the thornlike bulging abdomen decorated with raised scarification marks around the navel, a heavy-weighted cross-shaped coiffure is forming the counterpart to a small head protruding to the front, coloured glass beads inset on the surface of the seat, slightly dam., missing pieces because of insect caused damage (above all on the underside of the base), wooden base; such stools were only brought out on special occasions, such as birth, initiation, marriage or in case of death. They were reserved for a political and spiritual elite, kings, chiefs, priests, medicine men, healers or dignitaries. They mainly had representative and/or ritual function, but served as gifts to other potentates or dignitaries as well. Yet, ironically Luba stools are rarely intended for viewing. They were swathed in white cloth and guarded fastidiously by an appointed official.

area of Shaba, wood, middle brown shining patina with residues of black paint, short and strong legs are supporting a block-like trunk, the arms are carved close to the body, flanking a thornlike bulging abdomen, disc-shaped flattened shoulders are turning into a columnar neck which carries a head with a flat face and a cascade-like coiffure, hole on top of the head, slightly dam., cracks (left side of the head, back), missing parts (foot tips), on metal plate; the figure can be ascribed to the Shankadi-style (cascade-like coiffure).

Kasai, wood, encrusted blackish brown patina, short u-shaped legs are supporting a slender trunk, the arms carved free of the body and both hands resting aside the navel, a thin neck carries an egg-shaped head with bean-shaped eyes which are lying in big hollows, nose and mouth are merged to a triangle, linear incised tattoos, slightly dam., crack (lower part of the body on the right), on base; old collection number at the back of the base "89.51"; Original collection label "Harry Franklin" with handwritten remark at the bottom "Songe Zaire, Sangwa Village, Sentery Territory, Provinz Lomani, Kasai…", collected in 1942. This figure is the female counterpart to a male figure, which was auctioned at Sotheby´s New York in 1990 "The Harry A. Franklin Family Collection of African Art", Lot 412.
