Ivory Coast, Baule
wood, thick layer of dark brown patina, encrusted in some areas, with short legs and big feet rising from a circular base, supporting a cylindrical trunk with narrow, square shoulders, firmly enclosed by long arms carved in flat relief, both hands resting aside the navel on the bulging abdomen, a long neck, getting broader to the top, carrying a head with oval facial plane, marked by oversized circular eyes inset in deep sockets, the small mouth - directly situated below a triangular flat nose - hardly recognizable, grooved chin beard, crowned by a diadem-like coiffure with neck lobe, raised scarification marks on breast, neck and back, slightly dam., paint rubbed off, on base; the Baule believe that for everone there is an otherworldly partner. They are embodied by the "blolo bian" (male) and "blolo bla" (female) figures and they have to be treated well in order not to make them jealous. These very private sculptures were kept in the sleeping room, they received sacrificial offerings, they were fed and caressed.
