light-weighted wood, polychrome paint, one of them painted in gold, with diadem in relief and narrow slits underneath the eyes; a second one showing a simple, unembellished form, painted in green, and a third one, like a deamon, without lower jaw, painted in white, with distorted eyes and round conk, inscribed on the back, paint rubbed off, missing part and crack (green mask)

light-weighted wood, polychrome paint, one mask painted in green, with sharp cut, fine facial features, high arching brows and a beautiful mouth, coiffure in relief and an elaborate painted diadem, handwritten inscription on the back; a rose coloured mask with big nose and expressive spherical bulging eyes, diadem and coiffure in relief; one mask dyed in gold, with an especially sharp-edged and pointed nose, the latter dam. by a crack, all three with abrasion, minor missing parts

shield-shaped rattan network with triangular slits, filled with horizontal arranged boar tusks, the network spread with resin-like mass with abrus seeds pressed in, the rim enclosed with nassa snails, strings of cord around the rim, slightly dam., missing parts (boar tusks), abrus seeds missing; additional: two multi-strand necklaces of twisted cord, fixed and decorated with nassa snails; this compact breast ornament was surely part of a festive costume, but was even worn in military action. It had an amulet-like effect, but could as well provide defense against the enemies arrows. Aitape-Region, Sissano

16 Big ornament and currency ring "yua"

cut from tridacna shell, slightly vaulted on the outside, eight notches at the rim, natural veined, place of repair, on base; such rings were used as primitive money but men used to wear them during ritual dances as well. Sometimes they were even given to young girls who were about to marry. They fixed the rings to special bags used to be worn with a headband, and thus made them an important part of their festive costume. They were used for decoration of the big yam root as well.

wood, dark brown patina, traces of red pigment, kaolin, of narrow form, the facial features arranged slightly asymmetrical, the small eyes inset with blackish mass with an abrus bean pressed in (missing on the right), nose ornament "ufet" of hollowed bone, fixed by cord material, head band of plaited plant fibre with animal skin, slightly dam., traces of insect caused dam. (animal skin); when a trophy skull was lost or destroyed, a wooden head called "kus" was carved to replace it. In later years after head-hunting was banned by the authorities, wooden heads were used at initiation ceremonies in place of real and "freshly hunted" ones.

shell of giant Turbo marmoratus snail, a bird-shaped wickerwork mask with tubular eyes attached, spread with black, red and yellow painting, slight signs of abrasion, b: 19,5 cm; shells of the giant Turbo marmoratus snail were acquired by the tribes living along the coast. The object was used by the Yangoru on their own or it was traded with the Iatmul, who used it as bridal money. additionally a scoop of dark brown wood, the long straight handle decorated with a birds head, the scoop decorated with rattan plait, min. dam., slight signs of usage, l: 53 cm
