bone dagger, Sepik, l: 29 cm, cassowary bone, sharpened on one end, the swivel head pierced and cut on both sides, carved with diamond-shaped ornaments, bone daggers were worn in a band on the upper arm and served as a weapon for hunting and in war times; headband, l: 26 cm, string of plant fibre, with shell discs attached, cut from conus snail, the rings were regarded as means of payment and bridal dowry; comb with feather ornament "mindja", h: 14 cm/41 cm (together with cock-feather), seven teeth, fixed by a handle of knotted plant fibre; comb, h: 24 cm, cut from bamboo, 18 teeth, handle with incised ornaments

12 Head ornament "naute" and yams mask
Abelam, Papua-Neuguinea
2 pieces, cantilevered disc-shaped ornament of lygodium wickerwork, h: 44 cm, plaited in openwork design with zigzag ornaments, the struts inbetween dyed with red and white pigment, slightly dam., broken in one place (outer rim), paint rubbed off; dance ornament for "big men" ("nimandu"), worn e.g. at the so-called "kagu" dance in the ritual house. By small rods and cord attached to the hair on the back of the head. Yams mask, Maprik, h: 22 cm, lygodium wickerwork, dyed with red and yellow ochre, black and white pigment, showing a stylized mask face, dominated by spherical bulging eyes, paint rubbed off; after the harvest of the big yams used for decorating the fruits.

Tolai, Neu Britannien
light-weighted wood, polychrome natural colours, oval handle, carved with a u-shaped element formed by curved bird necks, crowned by a human half figure with both arms raised aside, coiffure of fur, crowned by a high-towering, lancet-shaped superstructure in delicate openwork design, based on leaf veins or feathers, enlivened by light polychrome paint, grass green, yellow, sky blue..., slightly dam., rep. (left arm), on base; used at the so-called "dance of the young coconut" - "kulau". Just men were allowed to wear such dance staffs. Women had to guide the dancers to the dance ground or accompany them with singing. The "bair" depict ancestor spirits. Their conception is determined by the picture the artist had from the spirit which inspired him.

18 Overmodeled ancestor skull

Südliches Malekula, Vanuatu
human skull, narrow in form with a striking lengthened back of the head, aside of the latter overmodeled with a clay-like mass, the curvatures achieved by a bast fibre underlay, the opened mouth revealing five original teeth, the facial plane dyed with red pigment, small cracks within the mass, layer of pigment missing in some areas; the skull presumably was part of a complete ancestor effigy. The body consists of a cane frame overmodeled with vegetable-fibre paste. Subsequently it was painted and decorated with bark belt, breast ornaments, shells etc. The head after all is the overmodeled skull of the ancestor himself. These ancestor effigies were called "rambaramp"
