wood, polychrome paint (indigo blue, red, black and white pigment), a high towering female figure rising from a small crescent-shaped hook, the arms carved free, with both hands resting aside the accentuated navel, a flat oval head carved with ornamental facial features, small eyelet for support, slightly dam., cracks, minor missing parts (mouth, chin, right foot), paint rubbed off, on base; food and other valuables were kept in bags and baskets which were suspended from the rafter of the building by means of two- or three-pronged hooks.

25 Dance wand "kaidiba"

Trobriand Islands
light brown wood, black and white pigments, consisting of two board-shaped flattened elements, joined by a bar which served as grip for the dancer, the planes richly decorated with incised ornamentation, min. dam., slight signs of abrasion; "kaidibas" were used for a variety of different ceremonies including those at harvests, prior to the launching of a new canoe, and in preparation for war. As they were held, they were twirled back and forth to the rhythms made by hand and finger drums, the curvilinear relief designs enhancing their circular movements.

wood, coated with gold leaf, dark red and black paint, rising from a half-spherical lotus blossom, the voluminous body with round forms wearing a short loincloth, the naked head carved with harmonical, well-balanced features, both hands showing the same gesture, slightly dam., paint rubbed off, cracks (lotus blossom); the number and variety of Buddhistic ritual figures is unmanageable. Posture and sitting position determine certain deities and their characters. The gesture of the hands is a decisive attribute for identification of various figures and the symbolism they represent. There are 40 "mudras", symbolic gestures of Buddha. The lotus blossom is a symbol of purity.
