101 Pair of figures "bo osu"

Baule, Elfenbeinküste

wood, dark brown patina, encrusted with clay, crude carved figures with cylindrical bodies and indicated arms, the facial features incised, massive coiffures, fabric loincloth, slightly dam.; the "bo osu" represent bush spirits and were always carved in pairs. They are placed in shelters near a path or on top of termite hills. This placement is intended to provoke the spirit to stay out of the village and help with the hunt. "Bo osu" go around with bush animals and help their human partners to shoot and trap small game. They are personal figures for hunting.

Female ancestor figure "blolo bla", Baule, Elfenbeinküste

Baule, Elfenbeinküste

wood, brown patina, partly encrusted, shiny in some areas, showing a dignified, almost regal posture: the upper part of the body lengthened, the shoulders tightened and the face with beautiful modelled features turned upwards, the eyes with lowered lids bestowing an internalised resting expression on the face, completed by an elaborate, fine grooved coiffure, raised band scarifications on the body, slightly dam., minor missing parts (forehead, navel, left knee, base), cracks (base, left shoulder); the Baule belief that every man has a partner in the hereafter. These partners are embodied by the wooden figures "blolo bian" (male) or "blolo bla" (female version). As very private items they are kept in the sleeping room, hidden from the eyes of public. In order to keep them well disposed, they receive sacrifical offerings, they are feeded and caressed.

Male figure "blolo bian" or "asie usu", Baule, Elfenbeinküste

Baule, Elfenbeinküste

wood, blackish brown patina, remains of pigments, sacrificial traces, sitting on a stool, both hands resting on the knees, showing tribe-typical scarification marks and facial features, crowned by an elaborate carved coiffure, min. dam., missing parts through insect caused damage, cracks, signs of abrasion; presumably representing a "blolo bian" figure. Because of the traces of libation it could be a representation of an "asie usu" bush spirit as well. The figures of bush spirits are displayed between the fortune teller and the client during a public performance. But unless collected in situ, the actual function of a figure cannot reliably be determined.

Sitting female figure, Baule, Elfenbeinküste

Baule, Elfenbeinküste

wood, shiny reddish brown, in some areas dull greyish-brown patina, a high towering, strong figure, the arms shortened, while the big hands accentuate the prominent abdomen/navel, abundantly decorated with scarification marks (above all face and neck), slightly dam., cracks (between the breasts, left side of the head and body, stool), place of repair at the base of the seat, on blocklike base; the depiction of the female body as the origin of life is one of the most important symbols within Baule spiritual world. Present figure might encorporate a spirit wife "blolo bla" or a bush spirit "asie usu". The actual function cannot clearly be determined, when the figure once has left its place of origin. The "blolo bla" belong to individuals, they receive offerings in order to keep them well-disposed. The "asie usu" belong to the property of a fortune teller who has to handle them with care in order to get their support. They are displayed between the fortune teller and the client during a public performance. They act as intermediaries between man and bush spirits.

Face mask of the "mblo"-group, Baule, Elfenbeinküste

Baule, Elfenbeinküste

wood, greyish brown patina, kaolin, of oval hollowed form with a zigzag framing, marked by outstanding fine and well-balanced facial features and a coiffure with fine notched ornaments, surmounted by a long neck with janus head on top, flanked by lancet-shaped projections, slightly dam., minor missing parts, on metal base; masks belonging to the group of "mblo" do not have any ritual meaning, they are purely performed for entertainment. They represent beautiful women or girls from the village and definitely have portrayal character. They may as well represent men who became known for bravery or outstanding social behaviour. The "mblo" masks appear at the "gba gba" dance, which is looked upon as "women dance", because women are allowed to join it, and because the movements are very feminine. Its an entertainment dance, taking place on rest days or days of mourning.
