bronze, of oval form, the eye zone deepened, forehead and chin vaulted, presenting a teeth-baring mouth, eyelets for support on both sides, acrylic base; such small sized brass masks are representations of helping spirits, they belong to individual members of a secret society or provide protection for a whole village. They are probably never been worn, but kept as manifestation of supernatural helpful spirits.

114 Mask "kagle"

wood, middle brown, partly encrusted patina, of oval form, marked by a roof-like protruding forhead and half-circular vaulted cheeks, beard of wool threads, pierced around the rim, min. dam., slight signs of abrasion; the "kagle" mask figure used to wear a wig of cotton threads and a puffed raffia fiber skirt. Important requisites were bundles of hooked branches, used to annoy the audience. According to the hooked branch "ka" the mask figure is called "kagle".

wood, shiny, blackish brown patina, oval face with circular pierced eyes, framed by three grooves, nail on the forehead, pierced around the rim, min. dam., slight signs of abrasion, on base; these masks are called runner masks, "running juju". They are widespread among the northern Dan (because of the dry area they are mostly used there). Worn by the fastest runner of the village, they are supposed to warn the inhabitants and to call for help in case a fire breaks out.

116 Face mask "deangle"

wood, brown spotted patina, of oval hollowed form with a tapering chin, the eye-zone deepened in a horizontal line, four metal teeth inserted, pierced around the rim, slightly dam. (nose), paint rubbed off, traces of insect caused damage; the "dean" mask characters belong to the circumcision camps ("mbon") of young boys and girls, which are always situated in the holy forest nearby the village. The camp is protected by the invisibible forest ghost "nana", who appoints the "deangle" mask characters. They are responsible for food and protection of the young initiates.

Ivory Coast, Diomande
wood, blackish brown patina, of oval form with a thorn-like bulging forehead and tapering chin, the narrow slit eye-zone deepened in a horizontal line, the facial contours accentuated by grooved scarifications, pierced around the rim, slightly dam. (nose, mouth, cheeks), traces of wear backside; the Diomande are a small ethnical group, belonging to the Konyanke, living on the northwestern Ivory Coast, and in parts of the bordering Guinea. The Konyanke on their part, settle among the Dan, which is why a clear attribution of masks to one or the other ethnical group is extremely difficult.

wood, polychrome paint, an elongated oval mask superimposed to a maskboard, uniting human and animal features, crowned by two pairs of horns, pierced around the rim, min. dam., slight signs of abrasion, missing parts (horn, mouth); "djela" is considered an offspring of the mask couple "zamble" and "gu", but has no ceremonial power inherited from its parents. It is a splendid dancer who performs on all kinds of festive public occasions, but fulfills no ritual function.
