131 Pair of miniature figures "tugubele"
This object is not available any more.
Ivory Coast, Senufo
light-weighted wood, blackish brown patina, strongly encrusted in some areas, a male and a female figure, with nearly identical formed bodies, at which the male is modelled more delicate and regular than the female, it is carved with necklace and a bow-shaped pierced coiffure, while the female shows a disc-shaped crested coiffure with a kalao birds beak above the forehead, slightly dam., paint rubbed off, side by side mounted on a board-shaped base; the "tugubele" always appear in pairs, male and female. They are the soothsayers helping spirits. Every now and then they receive sacrificial offerings in return for their help and in order to ensure their benevolence. If such a personal contact exists, the helping spirits were called "madebèlè" (sing. "madèo"). The "tugubele" are nearly omniscent. Nothing happens without reason, coincidence doesn't exist. But as they are not able to be everywhere, they are supported by the chameleon, the small water turtle and the python, which is the most significant part. The python is the patron of the "tugubele" and they are his messengers.
