201 Fragment of a title staff

202 Standing male figure
Montol, Nigeria
wood, reddish brown patina, traces of black paint, crude forms, the upper part of the body and the legs slightly twisted against each other, marked by bulky shoulders, massive thighs and short stump arms, the spherical head showing an abstract upturned face without mouth and chin, a bulging back, traces of insect caused damage (neck, cheek, right foot), cracks (head), on blocklike base; the Montol are an ethnical group of about two million people, living along the northern banks of the Benue, between Jos and Shendam. Their sculptures were used for fortune telling and healing rites. They belong to a men society called "komtin". Figures of the Montol are quite rare and their style is not clearly defined. It varies from one carver to the other.

wood, greyish black patina, residues of white pigment (eyes and coiffure), u-shaped arranged legs supporting an elongated, extremely slender trunk with a thorn-like protruding navel, flanked by long and flat arms enveloping the body, the abstract facial features dominated by big, circular incised eyes and a coiffure with massive flap-like lobes, slightly dam., minor missing parts (coiffure), crack (in whole length through the trunk), paint rubbed off, encrusted with clay, on block-like base; Mumuye figures represent various ancestors and culture heroes who are thought to be able to control the forces of nature and the affairs of man. Like many other Benue figures, the sex is indistinguishable. They were employed in a variety of contexts. They are associated with dispensation of justice, truth telling, healing and rain-making. Accordingly they were kept in the rainmakers house or they were displayed in front of the blacksmiths home.

Ogoni, Nigeria
wood, spotty patina, black paint, the body provided with movable arms, decorated with carved and painted ornaments, the coiffure arranged in two side lobes and neck plait, min. dam., missing parts (foot tips), traces of insect caused damage, signs of abrasion, on base; the Ogoni borrowed the art of puppetry from the Ibibio and adapted it to fit preexisting patterns of social criticism. This puppet probably depicts a young girl going through the initiation process. During this period adolescent females are spoilt and fed abundantly to enhance their appearance and assure their health and fertility.

209 Horned mask "elu"

wood, dark brown patina, remains of paint, kaolin, of oval hollowed form, showing tribe-typical facial features and scarification marks, horns in the shape of rabbit ears projecting to the back, dam., missing parts through insect caused damage (esp. backside), slight signs of abrasion; probably a variation of the "karikpo" mask type. The combination of human face and animal horns is a popular mask form in southeastern Nigeria. The horns symbolize superhuman power and strength.
