283 Standing male ancestor figure

Basikasingo, D. R. Kongo

wood, blackish brown patina, flat legs with thornlike protruding knees, the bulky trunk with tapering abdomen enclosed by clamp-like arranged arms in flat relief, the head carved with a triangular face with elongated chin, slightly dam., cracks (breast), minor missing parts, traces of insect caused damage (bottom of the base), paint rubbed off; for quite a long time the Basikasingo were equated with the Bembe. First through the works of Biebuyck they got back their identity: they are not related with the Bembe, they just inhabit the same territory at the western river bank of Lake Tanganyika. The Basikasingo have rites for ancestors, who have the power to cause disease and misfortune. If a mischief happened, people tried to experience the wishes of the ancestors by interpreting dreams and by sooth saying. They were kept in small shrines under the authority and guardianship of a petty chief, village headman or dominant lineage elder. Sometimes such figures were individually identified ancestors, called "bashumbu".

Standing male ancestor figure, Bembe, D. R. Kongo

Bembe, D. R. Kongo

wood, red and blackish brown patina, marked by a slender, elongated trunk with the typical raised geometrical scarification marks, which are nearly covered by cotton fabric wrapped around the hips, the eyes inlaid with shards of white porcelain, the cantilevered coiffure with neck lobe, both wrists carved with bells, cavity near the rectum, slightly dam. (rims of coiffure, ears and beard), cracks, on base; representations of ancestors are typically empowered by a diviner, who places various medicinal substances into a cavity near the rectum. The ancestor's life force is then considered to reside within the figure, offering protection to the surviving family as well as a connection between the living and the dead. Belonging to the type of the so-called "crypto- fetish", a terminology introduced by William Fagg. The most striking feature of Bembe statuettes is their lengthened body which is richly decorated with tattoos, marking the identity of the depicted person as well as her social rank.
