361 Anthropomorphic miniature mask "ikoko"

This object is not available any more.

Anthropomorphic miniature mask "ikoko", D. R. Congo, Pende

D. R. Congo, Pende

ivory, of oval hollowed form, the coiffure arranged in three jags, hanging eyelids and pierced pupils, circular tattoos with drilled hole in the middle, holes for support; such pendant masks were invoked during healing rites, where the patient was obliged to wear a miniature version of the mask around the neck, by way of protection. These pendants were formerly presented as trophies to the boys following their initiation "mukanda". It is apparent, that "ikoko" are mostly copies of masks known for their healing powers. Evidently it is the "fumu" mask, which is usually portrayed in this way.

wood, dyed with red and black pigment, of oval hollowed form with a tongue-shaped projecting beard, raffia fibre bonnet, grass fibre bunches, decorating nails, slightly dam., missing part backside at the rim, on metal base; the mask represents one of the three oldest mask types of the Pende: "giwoyo", "muyombo" or "ginjinga", which can only be distinguished by the accompanying costume, head ornament, paraphernalia and dances. All three are characterized by the prolonged chin, interpreted as beard "mwevu", a sign of dignity and wisdom of the ancestors. The mask type is used at hunting and initiation rites, as well as during circumcision ceremonies. It should guarantee fertility and well-being of the community.
