wood, brown patina, cylindrical trunk with big rectangular cavity, the bearded face coated with fine vertical striations, dam., traces of insect caused damage (front of the trunk), missing parts (foot tips), on base; such figures had a protective function against diseases and sorcery. Their magical power was kept in a cylindrical package, called "bilongo", which includes the special ingredients put together according to the needs of the person in question. The package was fixed to the abdomen because to the Tekes opinion, magical wisdom can be swallowed and preserved in the stomach.

wood, dark brown patina, metal, broad blade with delicate jagged rim and punched ornaments, the long wooden handle partly wrapped in metal wire, min. dam., slight signs of usage and abrasion; for the ritual knocking down of fruit the Tetela use an unusually shaped, copper- and brass-plated knife.

408 Standing male figure

D. R. Congo, Tumbwe

wood, reddish brown patina, black paint in some areas, a high-towering body with elongated limbs, drilled hole on top of the head for insertion of magical mass, dam., missing parts (left upper arm, both foot tips and base), old place of repair (a small wooden piece fitted in the left thigh), on metal plate; the Tumbwe live at the southwestern river banks of Lake Tanganyika. Few sculptures are known from this area and oral history says that some were made by Luba carvers at the request of the Tumbwe chief Lusinga.

wood, dark brown patina, the narrow, elongated face whitened with kaolin, marked by a bold, triangular nose, the eyes accentuated with indigo blue pigment, plug-shaped handle at the chin, drilled holes for fixing grass fibre bunches, minor missing parts through insect caused damage on the upper rim, paint rubbed off, on metal base; danced by young men at initiation rites "mukhanda". It is unknown however, who or what it represents, a differentiation within the great variety of this mask type hardly possible.
