These figures are paired with a separate bag of charm ingredients or consist of paired statuettes that may be freestanding, joined back to back, or a single statuette with janus face arms and legs. Charm medicines are either sealed in the stomach portion or hang in pouches or antilope horn containers at the neck or waist. Following the induction of its victim or selected caretakers, the statuette is kept within a special cabin or shelter in the compound of a headman or chief.

418 Neckrest
This object is not available any more.
Yaka, D. R. Kongo
wood, brown patina, in shape of a quadruped, supporting a rectangular pillow with curved sides, decorated with metal tags, min. dam., small missing parts, traces of insect caused damage, on wooden base; elaborate coiffures necessitate an object of traditional furniture as a headrest "musaw". When lying on one's side, this small object supports the head just below the ear at the junction of neck and head. It is probable that most Yaka headrests had a charm packet inserted into a prepared cavity, or charms where otherwise attached. This served to protect the owner from malevolent influences while sleeping.

419 Anthropomorphic face mask
This object is not available any more.
Yombe, D. R. Kongo
wood, spotted light brown patina, slanting, lancet-shaped pierced eyes and prominent cheekbones, an open, teeth-revealing mouth, slightly dam., crack (rim backside), on metal base; the treatment of the eyes recall those of Chinese background who immigrated to the Kongo in the late 19th century to work on the railroads and do commerce. The mask was danced ritually by a male, possibly used to portray the strangeness and alien quality of foreigners. It is also possible that it was a form of protraiture, made to honour a respected Chinese individual of high status residing in the Kongo.

420 Torso of a female figure
This object is not available any more.
Zela, D. R. Kongo
wood, reddish brown patina with traces of dark brown paint, voluminous forms, a large-scale face with tapering chin and metal eyes, raised tattoos on the body, incised scarification marks on the face, slightly dam. (coiffure, nose, base), missing part through insect caused damage (backside), crack (back), paint rubbed off; in the area occupied by the Zela we find the same sculptural typology as that found throughout southeast Luba land, both in ritual and prestige-oriented sculpture. But here we often find depictions of male-female couples who represent the primal ancestors, a rare occurrence in Luba art. We find them on twin stools, twin neckrests, twin combs, twin staffs etc. Present figure might have been the female part of twin figures, originally placed on a shrine.
