Tomb figure "moira goh-gjih", Sudan, Bongo

Sudan, Bongo

heavy wood, greyish brown patina, small residues of dark brown paint, elongated cylindrical trunk, breast and arms just indicated, crowned by a bowl-shaped head with pierced eyes and hollowed ears, dam., cracks and abrasion because of weathering, missing parts through insect caused damage (left leg, head), on metal plate; anthropomorphic statues like the present one were placed on memorials, which were erected together with a cylindrical stone crop about one year after the funeral took place. The figures depict the dead, who could be identified by individual characteristics such as tattoos or scars, but might as well depict the killed enemies. Aside the Bongo had notched or fork shaped posts, which refer to successful hunting or heroic deeds of the deceased.

Tomb stela with ancestor head, Sudan, Bongo

Sudan, Bongo

wood, light brown patina, massive, cylindrical post, the lower half plain, while the upper half is divided into disc-or spindle-shaped segments, crowned by a broad head with a flat facial plane, dam., traces of insect caused damage, small missing parts, traces of weathering, on metal base; the Bongo were a society of hunters and warriors. Success in hunt and combat awarded them with social prestige during lifetime. After their death tomb stelas were set up, as signs for their success in hunting, assuring that the hunter keeps the rank he gained during lifetime even in the hereafter. The conception of the stela-like sculptures as well as the area they were placed in, reminds of the sepultural conventions of the people from Madagascar, i. e. the Mahafaly and the Sakalava.

Standing grave post figure, Madagascar

Madagascar

wood, middle brown patina, block-like contour, carved in Colon style with uniform and adequate headdress, dam., the surface showing strong traces of weathering and insect caused damage; figural sculpture of Madagaskar is basically made for graves. Present figure was part of an "aloala" (= "shadow of death") funeral post, which usually have a height of two, up to four meters, and which used to be placed on the "valavato", the funeral area of distinguished clans. The restless souls of the diceased inhabited the "aloalas". They could be calmed down and honoured by sacrifices.

animal hide, spotty patina, of circular form, conical-shaped vaulted in the centre, decorated with concentric rings and simple motifs, massive leather handle on the rear, slight signs of abrasion; the shields are known for their flawless workmanship and, in particular, for their striking graceful and elegantly executed gravings. By wearing them on their lower arm, the Somal were able to use that arm for animated gesticulation.
