Ivory Coast, Agni
wood, blackish brown patina, marked by an elongated trunk with narrow sloping shoulders and short arms, the long neck carved with rings, the coiffure arranged in two bulging lobes with middle parting, elaborate carved facial features, band tattoos, slightly dam., (breasts), paint rubbed off (nose), crack (right side of head and neck), missing parts (both feet), old place of repair (small wooden piece inserted backside), on metal plate; sculptures of the Agni are quite rare, we don't know much about them. In 1914, the renowned Liberian prophet William Harris arrived in the area of the Ivory Coast and through the fervour of his preaching induced whole populations to abandon their statues and traditional religious cults. As a consequence a lot of sculpture was destroyed. The patina proves that the object has often been ritually washed.
