wood, shiny, brown patina, remains of black paint, lengthened limbs, eyes with cowrie snail inlay, cap-like grooved coiffure, min. dam., missing parts (foot tips), cracks, slight traces of abrasion, on metal plate; rare piece of work made by a wandering carver.

Tanzania, Kwere

brown wood, spotty blackish brown patina, decorated with stud metal tags, reptile drum skin, min. dam., minor missing part (right ear), slight traces of abrasion, fissures; drums exist in all shapes and sizes throughout the whole area, for no ritual or festivity can take place without the beating of drums. Their use is codified, certain drums must be played in a certain order. Only one type of small drums incorporates an anthropomorphic sculpted element, and though its exact use is unknown, it was undoubtedly played in a sacred context.
