wood, partly encrusted matt patina, showing closed contours and a slightly asymmetrical body and facial features, dam., missing parts through insect caused damage (feet), cracks, slight traces of abrasion, on metal base; present figure belongs to the type of the "ordinary bateba phuwe" figures, who should protect humans against witches and sorcerers, should help finding a partner for marriage and should prevent illness and infertility.

Burkina Faso, Turka

wood, shiny brown patina, blackened in parts, fragmentary (lower legs missing), block-like contour, body and face covered with linear incisions, min. dam., minor missing parts, slight traces of abrasion, on wooden base; the Turka are a small subgroup of the Senufo, living in the southwestern part of Burkina Faso. Only few figures of them are known, characterized by a headstrong style, incorporating various elements of the neighbouring people, but keeping their own, very personal note.

wood, black patina, kaolin, broad square shoulders and short arms, the big head with a grooved coiffure in two lobes and "gash-like" scarification mark on the cheek, slightly dam., cracks, on block-like base; the motive of motherhood plays an important role with African ethnies. The statues have fertilizing powers and were seen as temporary abode for the spirits of deceased persons.

wood, shiny, middle brown patina resp. corroded metal, carved with a zoomorphic "goli"mask, min. dam., slight traces of usage; additional: a gong with disc-shaped flattened base, on base; diviners are conditioned to go into a trance state when they hear the steady striking of an iron gong. They enter a trance in private, but they carry the gong and mallet in performance to use if they start to lose the trance during the session, or wish to deepen it.
