Ethiopia, Amarro
hippo skin, dark patina, with punched linear and circular bumps, completely decorated with ornamental incisions, big handle on the rear, slight traces of usage; the large handles were already borrowed in the distant past from the double-handled Islamic round shields. Frequently rubbing far into the shiny, darkly coloured surface ensured elasticity and resiliance.

Ethiopia, Gato
presumably "gayo" wood, greyish brown patina, a stylized post-shaped body, the elongated head constricted, crowned by a high towering slanting head crest, phallus in flat relief, phallic forehead ornament "kalatscha", dam., cracks, the surface shows extreme traces of weathering, on metal plate; these phallic memorial posts were made for eminently respectable diseased. Originally they were displayed in groups, aside of the main post further sculptures were erected, depicting killed enemies of the diseased. But the enemies could as well be represented by symbols, such as a lance, a spit or a shield stuck into the ground. The animals captured by the diseased during his lifetime were represented by small animal sculptures.

Ethiopia, Sidamo
greyish brown stone (granite), phallic form, eyes and nose indicated, dam., missing parts (nose tip), on metal plate; Rift Valley in the south of the southern Ethiopian province of Sidamo is regarded as the largest megalithic complex on the African continent. Anfray et al. made an inventory of thousands of phallic megaliths in 1983.

light brown wood, the front and backside inscribed with coran sayings in black paint, older inscriptions now removed by washing recognizable below, sickle-shaped handle, slightly dam., cracks, on metal base; such tablets were variously used within subsaharian Africa, including northern Nigeria, for example by young boys for learning how to write. Religious specialists wrote coran sayings on the tablest, which were removed by washing lateron and the liquid was given to the clients for drinking, which should prevent him of any harm.
