Philippines, Ifugao, Artist: Tagiling
wood, partly encrusted, dark brown patina, rising from a massive, indented base, the stylized body arranged frontal and symmetrical, min. dam., slight traces of abrasion; the ritual sequence associated with the production of "bulul" images is long, elaborate, and requires considerable expenditure of resources. During activation ceremonies the "bulul" figures are bathed in the blood of a sacrificed pig, and at the conclusion of the ritual the figures are placed in the granary.

wood, shiny black patina, encrusted in some areas, circular hole on top of the head, slightly dam. (ears, brows, chin), missing part (teeth); made of the trunk of a single tree. Present mask type appeared at funeral ceremonies, they should ward off evil spirits and should accompany the souls of the deceased on their travel to the realm of the dead.

5 Gable carving "pandilati" or "dila paung"

Indonesia, Toba Batak
wood, painted in black, red and white, stylized "singa" mask in the centre, carved with curvilinear ornaments all over, slightly dam., missing parts, cracks, paint rubbed off, on metal base; such gabel carvings were placed in the centre of the elaborate facades of traditional Toba houses. The name ("dila" = tongue) is certainly derived from the Batak belief that the black magic of the much feared "begu" spirits can be warded off by a long extended tongue. The mythological being "singa" should ward off evil spirits as well.

8 Standing figure "hampatong"

middle brown wood, presumably iron wood ("Eusideroxylon Zwageri"), dam., missing parts, traces of corrasion and weathering, metal plate; big "hampatong" statues, more than two meters high, were set up at the entrance of the village to ward off evil demons. Furtheron there are small "hampatong" figures, used at home or in the rice fields, the latter usually double: male and female with marked breasts and sexual organs, to reinforce fertility.
