wood, reddish brown and dark brown patina, remains of indigo blue paint at the coiffure, two strings of blue glass beads, camwood powder "osun", a male and a female figure, the cape embroidered with polychrome glass beads, slightly dam., minor missing parts (above all face and coiffure of the female figure); "ibeji" figures were carved in remembrance of a deceased twin and it was cared for them just as for the surviving child. Accordingly sometimes they were supplied with such noble vests called "ewu", in the hope that the spirit of the dead child will return again in another birth to remain in the home.

(backside at the base), paint rubbed off; for the Yoruba the birth of twins promised wealth and prosperity, which is symbolized by the attached strings of cowrie snails.

wood, reddish brown patina in thick encrusted layers, encrustations with "osun" (camwood powder), numerous strings of coloured miniature glass beads, eyes with metal tags, showing an upright, nearly stiff postures with square shoulders, narrow heads with high towering crown-like coiffures, "claw-like" hands with the finger tips resting aside the tighs, slightly dam., cracks, abrasion; possibly a mixed type: parts of the hair-do, the face and the body are in Shaki style, the hand position in the style of the Abeokuta carvers, and the ornamented pedestal in the style of the Ilorin.

wood, reddish brown patina, encrusted with camwood powder "osun", black paint at the coiffure, male/female, adorned with six resp. seven strings of glass beads and ear ornament, metal tags as pupils (one missing), egg-shaped heads with a tapering coiffure in two lobes, angle-shaped incised scarification marks at the temples, completed by linear tattoos underneath the eyes, slightly dam.; as the Yoruba believe that twins have a combined, inseparable soul, the moment one of the twins dies, the life of the other is immediately imperiled, because the balance of his soul is seriously disturbed. Therefore an artisan is ordered to carve a small wooden figure to serve as new abode for the soul of the deceased. The "babalawo" performs the traditional ritual of transferring the soul into the wooden figure. They are called "ere ibeji". The Yoruba word "ibeji" means "twin", "ere" = "sacred image".

wood, dark brown patina, encrusted with camwood powder "osun", traces of indigo blue pigment, strings of black glass beads around the hips, brass chains, the eyes inset with metal tags, distinctive heads with broad jaw and flat chin, filed incisors, lancet-shaped scarification marks on the cheeks, places of repair (both feet of one of the figures); for a comparable pair see G. Stoll, Ibeji, 1980, ill. 192. Possibly in the style of the master carver Dagikonle of Igbomole. Igbomina is the name of a tribe with Ila Orangun as capital, which, along with Abeokuta, Oshogbo and Ekiti - forms one of the most important centres of traditional Yoruba wood carving.
