Burkina Faso, Mossi
wood, reddish brown patina, face and upper part of the body with incised scarification marks, crested coiffure, eyes with inlay, min. dam., missing parts (foot tips), fissures, traces of abrasion, on wooden base; while masks exclusively were used in rural areas, the figural sculptures belonged to the scope of the sovereigns, the "nakomsé". Present figure presumably representing an ancestor figure. Such figures are guarded and protected by Mossi chiefs and they are kept in special ancestral houses "kimse roogo". These nude figures represent the political power of the Mossi chiefs. When exposed to public view once a year, they were clothed in fabric.

Burkina Faso, Nunuma
wood, painted in black and white, helmet-shaped calotte with crest and elongated beak, eyes in concentric rings, crowned by a pair of horns arranged in a circle, coated with raised geometrical ornaments, dam., minor missing parts, paint rubbed off, cracks (spread with mass in some areas), rep. (one of the horns), traces of insect caused damage (backside); the Nunuma belong to the Gurunsi group. Their masks appear at funeral ceremonies and above all on yearly festivities held in order to clean the village. They take place before the rainy season, at the beginning of April. They introduce the new agricultural period, as well as a new ritual cycle.

heavy wood, matt greyish brown patina, massive form, with broad and angled shoulders, dotted scarification marks in the area of the abdomen, min. dam., cracks, minor missing parts, on base; the Turka are a small subgroup of the Senufo, living in the southwestern part of Burkina Faso. Only few figures of them are known, characterized by a headstrong style, incorporating various elements of the neighbouring people, but keeping their own, very personal note.

Ivory Coast, Abron
wood, black patina, kaolin, rising from long legs, the short arms carved in flat relief, the circular head with asymmetrical arranged eyes and prominent ears, slanting soles, slightly dam., cracks, missing parts (lower part of the body, feet), on metal plate; the Abron belong to the ethnic group of the Akan inhabiting the greater part of southern Ghana and parts of central Ivory Coast. In woodcarvings the geographical location of the Baule in the west and the Ashanti in the east can easily be seen: the result is an interesting and sometimes qualitatively significant mixture of styles.

group of three, wood, dark brown patina, horseshoe-shaped corpus with anthropomorphic head, bobbin missing, h: 14,5 cm; heddle pulley with buffalo head, slight traces of usage, h: 17,5 cm, on metal base; additional: a heddle pulley of the Senufo, Ivory Coast, crowned by a Kalao bird's head, complete with bobbin, min. dam., slight traces of abrasion, h: 17,5 cm, on wooden base; heddle pulleys belong to the weavers and were passed on as appreciated heirloom within the family. Because of their private character, the weaver is allowed to define their form on his own.

150 Male face mask of the "goli" group "kplekple yaswa"
Ivory Coast, Baule
wood, painted in black, red and white, of oval form, surmounted by curved horns, protruding eyes with painted pupils, drop-shaped framing and small drilled holes below, min. dam., traces of abrasion; a male mask type distinguishable from the female red ones by its black colour. The "goli" appeared in times of danger (e.g. epidemics) or at funeral ceremonies. They should connect the people with the supernatural powers "amwin", who could have good or bad influence on their lifes.
