heavy wood, partly glossy patina, remains of black paint, a high towering slender body, long legs without feet rising from a cylindrical base, elongated arms, min. dam., cracks, traces of insect caused damage, traces of weathering, on wooden base; "deble" figures appear in pairs, they belong to the secret society of "poro". Their correct name is "poro piibele" (= "children of poro"). They symbolize the traditions of society, the correct way of living, developed by the ancestors. They are used at burial ceremonies. Old members of "poro" tamp them down on the earth according to the rhythm of drums and horns, which is why they are called "rhythm pounder" as well.

184 Standing female figure
This object is not available any more.
Ivory Coast, Senufo
wood, shiny dark brown patina, without feet rising from a trapezoid base, angular shoulders, regular facial features, crowned by a tribe-typical headgear, min. dam., cracks, traces of abrasion, on wooden base; probably a "tugubele" figure. "Tugubele" are creatures of the wild. They are said to be good friends with humans and animals as well and act as an intermediate between them. When a tree has to be cut down their living space is violated and they require sacrifices in return. They want their existence to be accepted. Therefore two figures have to be carved, because like humans they live in a community, they are dwarf-like small and of human shape.

This object is not available any more.
Ivory Coast, Senufo

In literature this mask type is called "kpelie", which comes from the senufo word for "jumping". A generic term in later research is "kodal". Nowadays the plug-like projections on both sides of the chin are simply looked upon as lobes, while the ornamental projections to the sides just have the optical effect to round off the appearance of the mask.
