212 Small standing figure "yendu tchitchiri"
Togo, Moba
wood, partly shiny brown patina, of abstract form without recognizable facial features, min. dam., cracks, slight traces of abrasion, on metal base; according to size and usage the sculptures of the Moba can be divided in three groups: the smaller figures, displayed on altars are called "yendu tchitchiri" and have protective function for personal use; the sculptures of medium are called "bavong tchitchiri". The big sculptures finally, represent the clan founder "sakap", they are called "sakap tchitchiri" and protect the whole village.

213 Female ancestor figure "bavong tchitchiri"

Togo, Moba
wood, matt patina, of stylized form, crowned by a flattened head without facial features, min. dam., fissures, minor missing parts, on wooden base; "bavong tchitchiri" figures represent a near ancestor of the head of the family. They were displayed on the family altar "bavong" and should protect the whole family. Only the male descendants of diviners were allowed to carve "tchitchiri" figures. There are three different kinds of "tchitchiri", distinguished by size, representing various contents.

Nigeria, Basa Nge
wood, brown patina with traces of black paint, half-spherical vaulted, the front side carved with a heart-shaped facial plane with a large tapering nose, pupils with glass inlay, raised and grooved scarification marks, mirror-like ornaments, slightly dam., minor missing parts (above all backside at the rim), on metal base; the Basa-Nge are Nupe people located in the Benue and Niger region. They live on the banks of the Niger and inland. We do not know of any extended study on their culture. A few wooden sculptures are attributed to them and the raffia production of the Nge women is well known. Masks of the Basa-Nge are rare, curiously they are used today by the Muslims to celebrate the end of Ramadan.

wood, partly shiny patina, two figures with cylindrical torsi rising from one pair of legs, the female figure (identifiable by the red colour) with one-parted, the male figure with two-parted coiffure, min. dam., cracks, slight traces of abrasion, on base; presumably a variation of "tauwa" figures, which have a pure protective function. They mainly should help against snake venom, but they are used at harvest festivities as well. The female ones are called "tau-kendoa" and the male "tau-wandoa".

wood, polychrome paint, partly encrusted patina, consisting of three parts, fixed with rotan, the middle panel carved with a big mask face, the side panels with miniature masks, bamboo and plant fibre structure for fixation backside, min. dam., cracks, slight traces of abrasion, on metal base; probably used by the "ekpo" society as well as by the "ekong" society. The "ekpo" society became known for human sacrifices, their antichristian attitude and the use of poison to keep social and political control.

219 Standing female figure
Nigeria, Goemai
wood, red and blackish brown patina, scarification marks aside the mouth, slightly dam., minor missing parts (breasts, left arm and hand, lobes, skirt), paint rubbed off, on metal plate; carved figures mostly appear in connection with the mens society "kwompten", whose activities are kept strictly confidential from non-initiates and women. Obviously they were used for healing rites, at which the figures task is to find out the cause of the illness. In return the convalescent has to arrange a feast for the village community and has to sacrifice a goat and millet.
