wood, matt, slightly encrusted patina, remains of polychrome paint, pierced eyes and mouth, the coiffure arranged in grooves, min. dam., the Holo are a small ethnical group, living in the borderland between Zaire and Angola. In the course of their history they were exposed to various influences. The Pende crossed their realm, the Kongo introduced the sacred kaolin and their masquerades are adopted from the Yaka.

wood, middle brown patina, blower with two large-sized air chambers and one air pipe in stylized anthropomorphic form, the membranes of animal skin, presumably moved by sticks now missing, as well as the terracotta cone at the bottom of the air pipe, min. dam., cracks, traces of usage, on base; such bellows were used by blacksmiths to ignite fire. The stylized human head and the two bowls looked upon as breasts are forming a female figure, standing as a symbol for the belief in metallurgy and forging as a kind of sexual intercourse.

wood, red and white pigment remains, cloth, pierced eyes and open mouth with separate worked teeth, coiffure with feathers, min. dam., traces of insect caused damage, paint rubbed off in parts, on metal base; the Kanu are a small ethnical group settling between the Nyanga in the north and the Lega to the south in the Maniema area. Its unclear if the abstract masks found among them were really carved by themselves.

wood, remains of polychrome paint, partly shiny patina, conical protruding eyes, enclosed by drilled holes, collection number "CL: 21899" on the reverse, min. dam., slight traces of abrasion, on metal base; this mask is known as "pwoom itok", "ishendemala", "ishyeenmaal" or "shene malula". It can be found among various Kuba groups, including the Bushoong and the Ngeende. It appears during the young men´s initiation and also performs as a dance mask. It incarnates an old wise man who is consulted by the other dancers. Among the Bushong it is worn by members of the "babende" secret society, which is responsible for the apprehension of criminals.

D. R. Congo, Kuba - Dengese

wood, dark brown patina, red and black paint, shaved hairline, rectangular deepened eyes with painted stripes in red and white below, projecting disc-shaped beard with drilled holes, dam., missing parts (both ears), strong abrasion, rep.(beard/right hand side), on metal base; being one out of three royal masks, "bwoom" represents one of the oldest mask figures of the kuba people. It appears on funerals and at various ceremonial festivities, while it´s meaning changes according to the respective event. During the initiation of young boys for example "bwoom" embodies the ghost "ngeesh".
