wooden frame, shield corpus of rattan plait, decorated with geometrical ornaments in black/natural-coloured, round metal disc with central tip on the front of the shield, metal coated handle backside, fixed by a wooden plate and a fine, unusual elaborate rattan plait, remains of animal skin backside, old collection number "MII3", slightly dam., traces of corrosion, rattan partly missing at the rim, good condition; the round iron discs on the front of shields are to be found exclusively on the shields of the so-called "forward fighters", a rank bestowed as a sign of distinction only on especially brave warriors.

wood, shiny, dark brown patina, of vaulted form with pointed chin, parallel scarification marks in the area of forehead and cheeks, circular drilling underneath the nose, eyes and ears accentuated by kaolin, pierced around the rim, min. dam., fissures, slight traces of abrasion; the Ngbandi are an ethnic group numbering 120000 people in the northwestern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. They have their homeland to the east and south of the Oubangi River which in this area bends at a right angle to the east and forms the border to the Central African Republic.

wood, mat patina, red and black paint, kaolin, helmet-shaped, expressive face with big slit eyes and a trunk-like nose, disc-shaped flattened beard with zigzag ornaments, coiffure with knob-like projection, min. dam., rep. (metal clamps), slight traces of abrasion; the mask "giphogo" forms part of the chief's treasure, and is kept in his residence together with other sacred objects. The masked figure represents the political leader and symbolizes ancestral power.

light brown wood, dark brown patina, kaolin, expressive forms, whitened grooved scarification marks in the area of the angular forehead and cheeks, pierced around the rim, min. dam., slight traces of abrasion, on metal base; "tundu", the male clown and its female counterpart "gandumbu" were not originally worked in wood. The oldest villagers remember when both wore sacks of raffia pulled over the head, with crude holes for the eyes. The initial suggestion for a wooden-faced "tundu" came from a Belgian.

wood, polychrome paint, marked by continous brows, eyes with hanging lids and the typical "snub nose", scarification marks "mifunyi" on forehead and cheeks, raffia bast bonnet, min. dam., cracks, slight traces of abrasion, on base; masks of the Pende were used to worship the chief and for initiation rites or for sacred purposes of the priests. In particular, this artist has captured the "bedroom eyes" ("zanze"), believed essential to women's power over men.

wood, matt patina, polychrome paint, raffia bonnet with four cone-like projections, min. dam., paint rubbed off; present mask represents a chief and was used during masquerades supposed to entertain the village inhabitants. When the "phumbu" mask appeared, it was frequently accompanied by an assistant wearing a "tundu" mask. His task was to find a good seat for the chief with the best possible view.
