423 Standing figure

wood, dark brown patina, tube-like curved arms with both hands up to the opened mouth, slightly dam. by cracks (right face half), on base; such figures were supposed to be the abodes of the invisible benevolent forces of the ancestors. Accordingly they are used in ancestral rites by healers, diviners and clan chiefs.

wood, of elongated form with bulging forehead and chin, inflated cheeks, the whole face enclosed by an abundant grass fibre cuff, rep. (crack in the right face half), slight traces of abrasion; used in initiation to manhood contexts by the charm specialist "yisidika" to insure the well-being of the initiates. The "kakuungu" mask customarily appeared on the day of circumcision, the day of departure from the initiation camp, and occasionally for the breaking of food restrictions. Its appearance served to frighten young candidates into obedience and respect for their elders, and to threaten the person secretly herboring evil intentions against one of the initates. When not in use the "kakuungu" masks were displayed in special shrines of the "mbwoolo" society.

wood, red- and blackish brown shiny patina, handle in shape of a human half figure, an anthropomorphic head on either side, eyes with metal inlay, iron spout, slightly dam., paint rubbed off; the staff presumably belonged to a chief or diviner. The two faces in opposite directions refer to the ability to see both past and future.

wood, encrusted matt patina, pigment remains, cylindrical armless trunk, rectangular cavity with remains of magical substances, min. dam., cracks, slight traces of abrasion, on base; such power figures served as patron for hunting and should protect against diseases and evil spirits. Their magical power was kept in a cylindrical package, called "bilongo", which includes the special ingredients put together according to the needs of the person in question. The package was fixed at the abdomen because to the Teke, magical wisdom can be swallowed and preserved in the stomach.

wood, greyish brown patina, eyes with cowrie snail inlay, simple and crude forms: a bold base, forearms and hands block-like amalgamated, box-shaped extension backside, expressive facial features with prominent chin, magical additions: animal horn, animal skin, attachment of various paraphernalias (nut, seed vessels, claw), dam., minor missing parts, cracks, traces of weathering, on base; the Tetela live in central Zaire, artistically they can be divided in the Northern and the Southern Tetela. The northern group had all the characteristics of forest peoples, while the southerners were savanna peoples. Statuary of the south emulates or interprets styles of the northern Songe, with whom they were in constant conflict yet had exchanges.
