wood, red- and blackish brown patina, cylindrical arm- and legless trunk, prominent breast and navel, incised ornaments, slightly dam., minor missing parts (base), rep. (coiffure); the father of a young initiate "mwali" gives order for carving a "mwana hiti" figure, afterwards it is given to the clan leader who places it near ancestor figures in order to make their power passing over into the doll. After a further special treatment the girl receives the doll. In the following time of isolation the doll is dressed, fed and caressed like a child.

wood, black patina, a well-formed body rising from high legs with nearly naturalistic features, grooved coiffure, projecting ears, slightly dam., missing parts (left arm), crack (face); the Holoholo are a small ethnic group living in Zaire at the banks of Lake Tanganyika. Only few sculptures and figurally carved dignitary staffs are known. Their style reflects the geographic location, combining elements of eastern Zaire and Tansania on the opposite side of the lake.

wood, matt, middle brown patina, typical form, bipartite coiffure, min. dam., fissures, slight traces of abrasion; the term "mwana hiti" relates to trunk figures common all over East Tanzania. Most famous are those of the Zaramo and the Kwere. Until the end of the 19th century their usage was multifunctional. They served as tips for staffs, tomb figures, stoppers for calabashes, ancestor figures, for decoration of combs and music instruments and finally as dolls for ritual purposes.
