146 Fertility doll "akua ba"

light brown wood, shiny black patina, block-like base, of typical form with abstract body and disc-shaped flattened head, min. dam., sligh ttraces of abrasion, on wooden base; these dolls are supposed to encourage fertility. Women used to carry them on their back before and during pregnancy and used to treat them as real children. They gained their magical power from a deity via the diviner's blessing. After childbirth, they were either dedicated to the deity, placed on a shrine, or they were given to a child for playing.

wood, light brown patina, typical form, a rectangular face with bulging coiffure, slightly dam, on base; alike the "ibeji" figures of the Yoruba, the "venavi" figures were carved for deceased twins or triplets. They serve as abode for the spirit of the deceased. The Ewe women used to care for them, they were fed, washed and caressed. For the Ewe venerate twins and look upon them as connection to the otherworld.

wood, blackish brown patina, encrusted in some areas, abstract forms without facial features, slightly dam., cracks, small traces of insect caused damage, on plate; according to size and usage the sculptures of the Moba can be divided in three groups: the smaller figures, displayed on altars are called "yendu tchitchiri" and have protective function for personal use; the sculptures of medium size are called "bavong tchitchiri". The big sculptures finally, represent the clan founder "sakap", they are called "sakap tchitchiri" and protect the whole village.
