195 Protective figure "bateba phuwe"

wood, greyish brown patina, a slender well-balanced body with elaborate carved and regular facial features, earring with cowrie snail pendant on the right (missing on the left), missing parts through insect caused damage (above all backside, left leg, back of the head), cracks, on plate; the Lobi differentiate between four types of "bateba" protective figures: "bateba phuwe" (the so-called "ordinary bateba"), "bateba bambar" ("paralyzed bateba"), "bateba ti puo" ("dangerous persons") and "bateba ti bala" ("the extraordinary persons"). Present figure belongs to the type of "ordinary bateba", because it shows no special gesture or any physiological symptom.

wood, reddish brown patina, sacrificial traces, a slender, long-legged body, the right hand covering the mouth, rep. (right arm), min. dam., slight traces of abrasion, on wooden base; sad "bateba" ("bateba yadawora") are not dealing with witchcraft. They directly contact the inhabitants of the house were they were kept on special shrines. They express deep grief with different gestures and adopt the suffering of their owners.

wood, encrusted brown patina, remains of kaolin, a long post-like neck, elaborate carved face with a pointed nose, visible rows of teeth and "phisa" coiffure, rep., dam., cracks, slight traces of abrasion, on base; such head stakes are meant as support for "khele", a terrible power released by a killing. It is thrust into a mount of earth to form a "milkuur" shrine. The practice of carving a head without a body and sticking it on a shrine to symbolize the great power acquired by the murderers in the "milkuur" cult seems to originate from the ritual treatment that the Gan give the bodies of their kings and chief dignitaries. The bodies are always buried far away from the head.
