27 Mask "citipati"

India, Arunachal Pradesh
wood, partly shiny dark brown patina, in form of a stylized skull, min. dam., fissures, minor missing parts, slight traces of abrasion; the "masters of the cemetery", or "citipati" are two skeletons, male and female, who performed a skeleton ritual dance. In most monasteries the dance, symbolizing the cycle of life and death, is peformed once in summer and once in winter time. According to a Tibetan legend, the two "citipatis" were ascetic monks in their former life. Deep in meditation, they did not realize that a thief cut off their heads and threw their bodies in the mud. They changed into wrathful death spirits, with vows of eternal vengeance.

28 Face mask

India, Arunachal Pradesh
wood, black patina, nearly naturalistic facial features, characterized by accentuated brows and a strong nose with curved bridge, slightly dam., on metal base; in Arunachal Pradesh to the extreme east of the Himalaya live some ethnic groups of Buddhist religion. The term "monpa" is used for all tribes of the area. Masked dances and pantomimes are quite popular. The characters they represent are kings, priests, laymen, gods, demons and clowns. The "monpa" perform among others the fascinating dance of the skulls which shows the way the soul is weighed by the god "yama", and according to its merits is directed to paradise or hell.

wood, dark brown patina, remains of black paint, camwood powder and kaolin, massive wooden plank, carved with three anthropomorphic heads, the lower one wearing a warrior headdress with hornbill feathers, slightly dam., minor missing parts, cracks, traces of insect caused damage, iron framing and pedestal; used to adorn the front of a village "morung" (men's house), with stylized severed heads. Tangkhul is a Naga tribe living in the Indo-Burma border area occupying the Ukhrul district in Manipur, India and the Somra Tangkhul hills in Upper Burma.
