wood, small remains of coloured paint, beautiful facial features with lancet-shaped scarification marks, featuring palm fruit harvesters, the top of the palm tree is missing, drilled holes possibly a hint that real palm leaves may be attached, slightly dam., minor missing parts, cracks (at the back of the palm), paint rubbed off; the collector David L. Buckman was the head of Chase Bank operations in West Africa from 1960 to 1969. He was headquartered in Nigeria in the earliest part of the decade, and was taken to villages around the country where he purchased selected works of tribal art.

wood, reddish brown patina, of narrow helmet-shaped form, the facial features concentrated on a rather small area, provided with drilled pupils and lancet-shaped scarification marks, a balloon-like coiffure widely projecting to the back, old collection number inside "1011", a further one at the back of the head "43", slightly dam., minor missing parts (ears), paint rubbed off, cracks, rep. in the chin area; the "gelede" cult implores the fertility of the earth and the well-being of men. The society also honors the creative and potentially destructive powers of women. Life in a Yoruba town is very much based on the authority of female power and its links with the cosmos and social interaction. Annual celebrations are marked by elaborate dance performances, paired male and female masks worn by men who appear in rich textile costumes complete with wooden breasts.

wood, middle brown patina, pokerwork, a half-spherical calotte, carved with an anthropomorphic head with delicate facial features, the whole facial plane coated with incised linear ornaments, iron hook, slightly dam., minor missing parts, crack, abrasion, metal base; "egungun" masks appear at festivals or in times of calamity to cleanse the town of wrongdoing and misfortune on behalf of the ancestors. The wearer is dressed in a costume that reaches down to the ground and completely conceals his face and body.

wood, partly encrusted brown patina, remains of kaolin, carved with a kneeling female figure, min. dam., slight traces of abrasion, on base; during the ritual dance to the music of the Bata drum, the staff is vividly swayed to and fro. As soon as a dancer was obsessed by "shango" he was taken aside and coated with a waistcoat set with cowrie snails. With his dance from house to house he blessed the inhabitants.
