Kenya
wood, shiny brown patina, leather, remains of pigments, circular bulging shield attached to a long pole by leather straps, min. dam., slight traces of abrasion, on base; presumably from the Irangi, Burungi or Wassadani. In order to ensure easy handling and to improve the agility of the user, the shields have relatively small, hard pieces of leather to protect the fist.

Kenya, Massai
cow or buffalo hide, oval form, the rims lined and strengthened by leather stripes, a carrying pole along the middle is tightly tied to the back, the convex curving of the shield is achieved through leather straps stretched from the middle to the top and bottom, painted on the front, min. dam., traces of abrasion and usage; young warriors, not yet considered to be the equals of the older, were allowed just the use of black motifs on their shields. Only a man who had proven his bravery was allowed the colour red.

505 Fertility doll "mwana hiti"

wood, partly shiny brown patina, blackened in parts, cylindrical trunk with indicated breasts, head with two-lobed coiffure, min. dam., minor missing parts, slight traces of abrasion; the term "mwana hiti" relates to trunk figures common all over East Tanzania. Most famous are those of the Zaramo and Kwere. Up to end of the 19th century their usage was multifunctional. They served as tips for staffs, tomb figures, stoppers for calabashes, ancestor figures, for decoration of combs and music instruments and finally as dolls of ritual purpose.

Tanzania, Hehe
cow hide, wood, of oval form, front with interwoven hairy strips, on the backside a sturdy pole is pulled through the strips, thus fastening it tightly to the surface, min. dam., traces of usage; as with the Zulu shields, so too were those of the Hehe and Bena cut out of half-tanned cowhide. It was the Hehe and Bena who increased the stability of the shields to a certain extent by curving the rims forward. The Nguni custom of distinguishing regiments through the colour of the shields was also adopted by the Hehe and Bena.
