Papua New Guinea - Highlands

mother of pearl, sickle-shaped, dyed with red pigment, attached to a knotted band with pendants of kuskus pelt, rep. at the rim; such shells were means for trade and payment. Only on special occasions they were used as ornament, but not worn around the neck, but rather mounted on a pillow of grass.

fired reddish brown clay, two stylized heads peek up over opposite sides of the rim, representing flying foxes, incised and modelled ornaments, dam., missing parts, crack, rep. (ear of a flying fox); pouring out of the deep valley behind the Huon Peninsula and into the Gulf is the Markham River. This area is the home of the Adzera, masterly clay-pot makers who became famous for their beautiful cooking pots. Known as "Zumin pottery".

wood, shiny black patina, kaolin, of stylized form, linear incisions, slightly dam., missing part, crack; figurative free-standing sculpture is extremely rare in the Massim area. While the human figure, animals and birds of all kinds are commonly found as decorative and symbolic elements on utilitarian items, full-figure representations of spirits and ancestors appear to be very limited.

Papua New Guinea - Ramu River

wood, spotted patina, a mixture of red pigment and remains of dark brown paint, a simplified body with elongated arms rising from short legs, crowned by a prominent oversized head with the tapering chin reaching down to the breast, a beak-shaped nose, slightly dam., cracks, on block-like base; the "beak-style" is characteristic for figures of the Lower Sepik and refers to the close connection between man and bird. The Sepik people believe the bird to be responsible for carrying the soul of man into the other world ("soul bird").

wood, dark brown patina, red and white pigment, schematized forms, an eyelet-shaped projection at the back of the head, slightly dam., cracks, rep., missing part, on pedestal; the figures represent certain founding ancestors or cultural heroes, but various spirit beings as well. The transition above all regarding ancestor figures is fluent, for real ancestors are kept in reminiscence just for a few generations and become "anonym" lateron.

wood, middle brown patina, encrusted in some areas, simplified body, prominent oversized head with the chin reaching nearly to the middle of the breast, typical details: slanting eyes, a nose with pierced septum and the hat-shaped superstructure, slightly dam., minor missing parts, cracks, paint rubbed off, on plate; such ancestor figures - just like the skulls - encorporate the deceased. The head as abode of vital force is disproportionately emphasized.
