Tanzania, Zaramo

wood, shiny patina, the upper parts carved in a variety of geometrical forms, partly in openwork-design, each with a stylized "mwana hiti" figure on top, min. dam., slight traces of abrasion; a Zaramo or Kwere husband gave his wife a hairpin either when the first daughter was born or when they moved into their own house. Afterwards the hairpins were worn as ornaments on festive occasions.

animal horn, fabric, miniature glass beads, peg in shape of a human half figure with a small cavitiy on top of the head, min. dam., on metal base; the horns of various animals were filled with symbolic substances and closed by a large stopper. They were used to cure, heal, cast spells, divine and exorcise.
