Trilobite, Curiosities

Curiosities

fossilised, of elongated form, in a stretched out position, in a good state of preservation; coming from the area of Efut, Morocco. trilobites (meaning "three lobes") are a well-known fossil group of extinct marine arthropods that form the class Trilobita. Trilobites first appear in the fossil record during the Early Cambrian period (540 million years ago) and flourished throughout the lower Paleozoic era before beginning a drawn-out decline to extinction when, during the Devonian, all trilobite orders, with the sole exception of Proetida, died out. Trilobites finally disappeared in the mass extinction at the end of the Permian about 250 million years ago.

Petrified mesosaurus, Curiosities

Curiosities

on rectangular stone plate, rest., min. dam., minor missing parts; mesosaurus (meaning "middle lizard") is an extinct genus of anapsid reptile from the early Permian period of southern Africa and South America. It was one of the first reptiles to return to the water in which its amphibian ancestors originally lived. It was around one metre in length, with webbed feet, a streamlined body, and a long tail that may have supported a fin. Mesosaurus had a small skull with long jaws. Its most striking feature were its numerous, thin teeth. Each tooth had its own socket, but they were too thin to catch prey. Instead, they are thought to have been used to filter plankton from the water.

7 Petrified sword of a sawfish (Pristis pectinatus)

This object is not available any more.

Petrified sword of a sawfish (Pristis pectinatus), Curiosities

Curiosities

with special teeth, showing hooked endings, min. dam., fissures, minor missing parts; coming from the Sahara. the sword, also called rostrum is covered with motion- and electro-sensitive pores that allow sawfish to detect movement and even heartbeats of buried prey in the ocean floor. It is also used as a digging tool to unearth buried crustaceans. When a suitable prey swims by, the normally lethargic sawfish will spring from the bottom and slash at it furiously with its saw. This generally stuns or injures the prey sufficiently for the sawfish to devour it without much resistance. Sawfishes have also been known to defend themselves with their rostrum, against predators (like sharks) and intruding divers. The "teeth" protruding from the rostrum are not real teeth, but modified denticle scales.

Petrified crocodile skull, Curiosities

Curiosities

without lower jaw, min. dam., minor missing parts; crocodilia are the closest living relatives of birds, as the two groups are the only known survivors of the Archosauria. The correct vernacular term for this group is "crocodilians" and it includes the alligator, caiman, crocodile, and gharial families. The term 'crocodiles' is sometimes used to refer to alligators and caiman, or even their distant prehistoric relatives, "marine crocodiles".

Petrified skull of a gharial (Gavialida), Curiosities

Curiosities

typical head, without lower jaw, teeth partly preserved, min. dam., cracks, traces of age; coming from the Sahara. The earliest gharial may have been related to the modern types: some died out at the same time as the dinosaurs (at the end of the Cretaceous), others survived until the early Eocene. The modern forms appeared at much the same time, evolving in the estuaries and coastal waters of Africa, but crossing the Atlantic to reach South America as well.

Fossile hand of a ground sloth, Curiosities

Curiosities

petrified, lying in a wooden box filled with sand, rep., min. dam., traces of age; coming from Peru. Ground sloths are a diverse group of extinct sloths, in the mammalian superorder Xenarthra. They had been extinct on the mainland of North and South America for 10,000 years or more. Presumably the myth of the Mapinguari bases on the existence of ground sloths. According to the Cario Indians it was a monster living in a cave in the Brasilian rain forest. The creature was supposed to be nocturnal, eating plants, animals as well as humans.
