Small standing figure, Peru, Chavin

Peru, Chavin

ceramic, beige, hollow, the hands resting on the belly with circular piercing, head with stylized facial features, min. dam., acrylic base; Chavin is considered the oldest great culture of the Andean region. The Chavin culture has been dated to about 1000 - 400 and its best phase to between 700 - 200 B.C..Two important elements of the Chavin culture and art became the guiding patterns for nearly all Peruvian cultures up to the Spanish conquest: The feline mythological creature and the stirrup shaped spouts for vessels, which first appeared in Chavin.

Peru, Moche

light beige clay, painted in red, in form of a human head with full chops, min. dam., slight traces of abrasion; the Moche culture dating from about 100 before to 700 after Christ, stretched over several valleys on the North Coast of Peru. The period of Moche has therefore been called the classical period or period of craftsmen skilled in art. Chronologically Moche, which can be subdivided into five phases, coincides with another outstanding Peruvian culture - the Nazca culture to the South of Moche.

134 Bellied vessel

Egypt, Naqada II

clay, matt patina, red painting, two small handles with circular piercings, decorated with spiralic ornaments, min. dam., minor missing parts (rim), paint rubbed off; Naqada, a town 80 km north of Luxor, has given its name to the widespread Naqada culture, which is divided in three periods. The large quantity of remains from Naqada have enabled the dating of the entire culture, throughout Egypt and environs. Naqada II ( ~ 3500 to 3200 B.C.) is also called Girzéen or Girza cultura after the place where all the relics of this area were found.

stone ware, partly green-coloured, ten figural pieces, one of them depicting the goddess "Taweret", min. dam., minor missing parts, slight traces of abrasion; in Egyptian mythology "Taweret" is the Egyptian Goddess of childbirth and fertility. She was usually portrayed with the arms and legs of a lion and the back and tail of a crocodile (or even a complete crocodile perched on her back), while her pendulous breasts and full belly conveyed the idea of pregnancy. On occasion, later, rather than having a crocodile back, she was seen as having a separate, small crocodile resting on her back, which was thus interpreted as "Sobek", the crocodile-god, and said to be her consort.

brass, encrusted patina, traces of corrosion, on wooden base; presumably depicting Osiris, in shape of a pharaoh with "Atef" crown, crook (symbol of the good shepard) and flail (symbol of fertility). He is commonly depicted green (the color of rebirth) or black (alluding to the fertility of the Nile floodplain), in mummiform, wearing the trappings of mummification from chest downward.

Sudan, Shilluk

terracotta, black paint, white pigment, pipe head in shape of an animal with open mouth, coated with delicate incised patterns, slightly dam., missing part at the base; the Shilluk are an ethnic group in eastern Sudan with their homeland on the banks of the White Nile. They have become known through their leopard masks made of camel dung and calabash, and their clay pipe heads, like the present one.
