wood, greyish brown encrusted patina, an elongated body, slightly bent to the left, on both hips supporting a child, slightly dam., cracks, breakage (right wrist), on block-like base; "bateba" like the present should help women to have a baby. With gestures and facial expression the bateba always show events that the humans should imitate.

brown wood, blackish brown patina, sacrificial traces, high-legged, carrying a child on her left hip, min. dam., slight traces of abrasion, on wooden base; these figures are used in magical practices to drive off a "thila" that is dangerous for a pregnant woman. The fact of ritually "tying" the object to the woman makes a link between her pregnancy and the carved image of her future motherhood so that the evil "thila" will enter the object instead of her womb.

wood, brown patina, camwood powder, kaolin, half-spherical vaulted head, triangular pierced eyes, subdivided by a massive nose ridge, surmounted by two parallel, slender planks joined at the top and bottom, decorated with a flat incised triangular pattern, slightly dam., paint rubbed off, rep. (both horns); according to Christopher Roy carved in the so-called "Risiam style". The geographic area in which Risiam style masks are found corresponds to the area of the traditional Mossi states of Risiam, Ratenga and Zitenga, defined in the south by the White Volta River and in the north by the area occupied by the Kurumba.

wood, partly encrusted greyish brown patina, accentuated navel with radial tattoos, which can be found in the corners of the mouth as well, slightly dam., minor missing parts, on plate; the Turka are a small subgroup of the Senufo, living in the southwestern part of Burkina Faso. Only few figures of them are known, characterized by a headstrong style, incorporating various elements of the neighbouring people, but keeping their own, very personal note.

wood, blackish brown shiny patina, light-coloured pigment rubbed into the deepenings, legs with constricted strong calves, proportionally big hands resting on the bulging abdomen of a pregnant woman, abundant fine carved scarification marks, coiffure with fine incisions, slightly dam., on base; the Baule believe that every man has a partner in the hereafter. These partners are embodied by the wooden figures "blolo bian" or "blolo bla" (=female version). Thus being very private items they are kept in the sleeping room, hidden from the eyes of public. In order to keep them well disposed, they receive sacrifical offerings, they are feeded and caressed.

wood, slightly shiny blackish brown patina, abundantly decorated with raised scarification marks, elaborate fine grooved coiffure, slightly dam., cracks, on blocklike base; representing the female ideal in Baule culture; the elaborate coiffure and scarifications are signs of beauty; the extreme strong thighs should be a hint that she works hard on the fields and that her house never runs short of water and firewood.
