wood, greyish brown patina, two metal tags, bulging eyebrows, a bulky nose and angular cheeks, completed by a protruding mouth, which is covered by several layers of animal skin, in white paint numbered "18" on the back, a movable jaw which originally might have been present now missing, slightly dam., drilled holes around the rim partly broken, traces of inserted nails; "bugle" are warrior mask figures, who prepared men for war or led them into the fight.

wood, polychrome painted, a blackened facial plane, an open animal snout, but a narrow human nose, crowned by a curved board that is cut into two differently coloured spikes, dam., missing parts through insect caused damage and weathering, rep. (left spike); in the southern Guro country, the mask "zäwi"is extremely powerful and represents either the chief or the spokesman for the "je". In the north, however, its open mouth designates it as the "fire-eater's" mask.

wood, encrusted dark brown patina, horseshoe-shaped corpus with round shoulders, a columnar neck supporting an elongated head with angular hairline, min. dam., complete with bobbin and crossbar, min. dam., missing parts, on wooden base; heddle pulleys belong to the weavers and were passed on as appreciated heirloom within the family. Because of their private character, the weaver is allowed to define their form in his own.

wood, black patina, oval base, drilled around the rim, crossbar for fixing the mask with the mouth, carved with a narrow face with raised tattoos and elaborate four-lobed coiffure, mouth with filed incisors, slightly dam.; along with "zauli", a grotesque animal mask with long horns and "zamble", whose face should remind of a leopard or a crocodile, "gu" forms one mask family. "Gu" is always presented as a young woman, who is considered to be "zambles" wife. During the masquerade she appears after the two zoomorphic masks, accompanied by flutes, moving slowly and charming.

wood, honey brown patina, accents in dark brown, kaolin, indigo blue pigment, of narrow elongated form with a concave vaulted facial plane, sickle-shaped pierced eyes slightly asymmetrical arranged, flanking a delicate pointed nose, striated eyebrows, raised scarification marks across the forehead, at the root of the nose and on the cheeks, fine grooved coiffure with indicated ram horns, old collection label backside "6", at the same place in white paint numbered "B 17", min. dam., minor missing parts; "gu" is always carved "uanya iri nya", i. e. according to the image of "a beautiful woman". But it is always danced by men. A conical basket, attached to the mask is put over the dancers back of the head, thus helping the dancer to fix the mask in front of the face. The dancer wears a netlike costume, abundant grass fibre bunches, a womans cloth mainly in blue and an antelope pelt. Together with "zauli" - a grotesque animal mask with long horns - and "zamble" whose face should remind of a leopard or a crocodile - "gu" forms one mask family. "Gu" is always depicted as a young woman, who is considered to be zambles wife. During the masquerade she appears after the two zoomorphic masks "zaule" and "zamble", accompanied by flutes, moving slowly and charming, singing in honour of "zamble".

Ivory Coast, Ngere
wood, shiny brown patina, kaolin, cowrie snails, almond-shaped eyes accentuated by kaolin with small see slits, dominated by a broad mouth with full lips and metal teeth, the face framed by a coiffure of drilled woolen threads and a beard made from human hair, pierced around the rim., slight traces of abrasion, on wooden base; the Ngere are also called the Southern Wè. They are setteled to the southeast of the Dan and to the west of the Bete. The typical Ngere masks, however indulge in extreme presentations of human and zoomorphic elements.
