wood, middle brown patina, bonnet of plaited plant fibre strings, remains of a net-like knotted costume, leather strips, the pointed nose and protruding chin should caricature an European character, slightly dam., missing parts (above the mouth); in public performances "katoyo" helped Chokwe communities to cope with the presence of outsiders and their new forms of political influence.

wood, dyed in red, black paint at the coiffure, tribe-typical facial features and scarification marks, bulbous coiffure with lattice pattern, remains of a net-like cotton weave backside, slightly dam., minor missing parts, crack, on base; the Luena are an ethnic group in the border territory between Angola, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. In Angola, they are named after the river of the same name, and in the north-west of Zambia, they are known as Lovale. Present mask represents an early deceased mythical woman. The well-balanced facial features and scarification marks correspond with the dominating ideal of female beauty. The narrow slit eyes should point out that a deceased person is depicted.

wood, dark brown patina, rectangular corpus, carved with geometrical ornaments, fifteen metal keys, the corpus filled with rattling metal elements, min. dam., traces of usage; the length of the keys determines the different pitches. While playing, the sanza is held in both hands and the two thumbs, sometimes even the forefingers are plucking the strings.

469 Mask "sachihongo"
Angola, Mbunda
light brown wood, matt dark brown patina, wide and oval form, a broad forehead with deeply etched furrows, cross-shaped scarification marks on the cheeks, open mouth with separate worked teeth, pierced around the rim, min. dam., missing parts, traces of abrasion, on metal base; "Sachihongo" is the incarnation of a hunter, but is depicted as chief and sooth-sayer as well. The masks ("makisi") represent ancestor spirits. They appear after the circumcision of young boys, during times of convalescence in the bush camps, where they dance, accompanied by the songs of the male and female audience. The mask is completed by a crown of feathers, fiber beard and a net suit, made of the fibers of the "mushamba" tree.
