wood, reddish and greyish brown patina, stool in stylized animal form, parallel flanks in ornamental openwork design, elegant curved tail, useful as handle, traces of usage (from cutting), old age and weathering, cracks, missing parts; tool: the head is provided with an iron rasper for the production of coconut fibre, bestriding the stool one could easily scrape the coconut pulp.

Indonesia - Borneo, Dayak

"jelutong" wood, shield and grip carved from a single piece, on both sides painted in black, red and white, strengthened with rattan strips, to prevent splitting when struck by a sword, old collection label "24", slightly dam., paint rubbed off; wood shields were used for protection in warfare, on headhunting raids, or ceremonial display. The spiritually charged "monster" figure painted on the front is meant to instill fear in the enemy.
