Tanzania, Kwere
wood, dark brown patina, crowned by a seated female "mwana hiti" figure, min. dam., slight traces of abrasion; a Zaramo or Kwere husband gave his wife a hairpin either when the first daughter was born or when they moved into their own house. Afterwards the hairpins were worn as ornaments on festive occasions.

Tanzania, Kwere
heavy wood, partly shiny brown patina, a round hollowed seat supported by three u-shaped curved pillars, dam., missing parts through insect caused damage (seat), traces of abrasion; stools are not part of the furnishing of houses, most of the people prefer to sit on mats. They rather belong to the families treasure and are handed over from one generation to the next. They are exclusively used for rituals, because it is forbidden to get sacred objects in touch with the ground.

wood, dark brown patina, brows of real hair, dottet scarification marks, plant fibre cord (for fixing the mask with the mouth), slightly dam., minor missing parts (snout, rim backside), on metal base; the Mwera are a small ethnical group living in the south-eastern coastal back-country of Tanzania. Their works can only hardly be differentiated from masks and figures of the neighbouring Makonde.
