wood, the head ornament covered with clay-like mass and gypsum, originally painted in bright colours, the face without mass, dominated by the large painted eyes, written remark backside: "Last remains of my ...excavations in ...1893...E. Heltzel" (difficult to read or not readable at all), dam., missing parts; these masks were not intended as portraits of their subject. Rather, they represented the idealized features of the deceased following his resurrection as a divine being in the afterlife.

light brown wood, black patina, hollowed facial plane, elaborate coiffure in seven lobes, pierced around the rim, min. dam., traces of abrasion; the mask type "geh-naw" belongs to a secret society called "chu-den-zo". It used to entertain the audience when the initiated boys returned from the bush camp or when distinguished guests came to visit the village. The dancer wore the mask on the forehead, looking through a gap within the cloth, veiling his head and the upper part of his body.

76 Helmet mask "sowei" of the "bundu" society

Sierra Leone, Mende
wood, beautiful dark brown shiny patina, of typical form: cylindrical, with a compressed diamond-shaped face and voluminous neck rolls, five-parted coiffure, slightly dam., minor missing parts, small traces of insect caused damage; "sowei" masks are commissioned and worn by women, although carved by men. They are associated with the education and socialization of young females, and their excision ceremonies are supervised by the "bundu" or "sande" societies. Senior woman wear these masks at the termination of initiation ceremonies in order to embody their patron spirit a persona of fecundity and grace, known as "sowei". The neck rings, which are a significant characteristic of all "sowei" masks should not be regarded as representing obesity but of placing a plastic emphasis on the fine lines of the neck which are highly esteemed and regarded as being beautiful.

wood, brown patina, a columnar neck supporting a narrow anthropomorphic head with a long beak and elaborate headcrest in openwork design, min. dam., cracks, traces of abrasion; important requisite of the "simo" secret society. In front of the "anok" and through him, the young initiate is prepared for his rights and duties as adequate member of the social community. During the closing ceremonies antelope horns, filled with magical substances, were stuck into the openings of the anok. After the circumcision the young man takes the horns and keeps them. The "anok" plays an important role at harvest rites and at funeral ceremonies for important clan members as well.

Guinea-Bissau, Bidyogo
light weighted wood, matt middle brown patina, symmetrical body, a beautiful modelled face with simple facial features and helmet-shaped coiffure, ring-shaped loincloth, the legs subsequently cut and provided with bars for mortising the figure into the base, dam. (nose), paint rubbed off, crack, on pedestal; the Bidyogo are a small ethnical group in Guinea Bissau, living on the Bissagos islands off the coast. Everything sacred bears the Creole name "iran", and causes awe and respect among the people. Present figure presumably the depiction of a female ancestor.
