light brown wood, brown patina, in form of a leopard's head with visible teeth and carved dots, min. dam., slight traces of abrasion; the leopard symbolizes the total harmony between two forces: menace and temperance, attributes an ideal leader (oba) should have. Like the Oba, the leopard has the privilege of a leader, the "right to kill" so he stands above life.

(backside on the rim); among the masquerades of the "ekpo" society exists a great number of quite different mask types, which may be separated into two distinct groups, the "idiok" and the "mfon" masks.

typical indigo blue "sabu cloth" robe of strips of cotton fabric which are sewn together, narrow neck decolletage, extremely fine characteristic Bida embroidery showing clearly the "egba jufon" (small sword), the "gabiya" (triple leaf), the "gbanko tsufon" (strip above pocket) and the "gidan nazuman" (circle on the left), slightly dam., blotches (neck decolletage, embroidery); such vestments were reserved for men of high social prestige.

100 Female twin figure "ere ibeji"

wood, reddish brown patina, black paint at the coiffure, strings of glass beads, beautiful modelled head with regular facial features, drilled pupils without nail heads, cap-like coiffure with grooved pattern, slightly dam., hairline crack (right side of the body), rep. (base); an "ibeji" figure is carved as symbolic replacement for a deceased twin and in order to serve as new abode for his soul.The "babalawo" performs the traditional ritual of transferring the soul into the wooden figure. They are called "ere ibeji". The Yoruba word "ibeji" means "twin", "ere" = "sacred image".
