2 Dance shield
Philippines - Eastern Mindanao, Bagobo
wood, board-shaped flat, bicoloured, decorated with a striped pattern in reddish brown and blackish brown, the curved contour accentuated by tufts of animal hair, raised circle motif in the centre, carved handle backside, the broadest areas strengthened with bamboo, slightly dam.; during ceremonial festivities Bagobo men could be seen with a wooden shield used in a warrior's dance when not actively utilized in armed combat. Small bells often are attached to the edges of the shield.

5 Anthropomorphic half figure "pagar"
Indonesia - Sumatra, Batak
wood, blackish brown patina, encrusted in some areas, the eyes inset with abrus beans, plugged hole in the torso and the head, filled with magical mass "pupuk", slightly dam., crack, on base; "pagar" primarily protect houses, fields, and people against "begu" = malevolent spirits. One form of "pagar" is a dark wooden figure with separately carved arms and large outstretched hands. Another conventionalized posture depicts hands pressed against the stomach. The figure is filled with "pupuk" and is activated by special incantations spoken by the shaman.

9 Standing shrine figure
Western Nepal
wood, party encrusted patina, remains of pigments and kaolin, of stylized form, both hands resting on the chest, dam., missing parts, traces of weathering; great numbers of such figures can be found in special shelters in the peripheral area of the villages. Each statue symbolizes a deceased ancestor. The spirits of the deceased were honoured and dreaded at the same time. Only little is known about the origin and function of the figures of the Himalaya up to nowadays, the only obvious meaning is their protective function.
