wood, slightly encrusted brown patina, strings of miniature glass beads around neck and hips, carved anklets, raised scarification marks, min. dam., traces of insect caused damage (base), fissures, on wooden base; embodyment of the ideal female in Baule culture; elaborate coiffure and scarifications are signs for her beauty; the extremely strong thighs should be a hint that she diligently tills her fields and that her house never lacks water and firewood.

135 Mask "zakpai"

wood, encrusted brown patina, entirely coated with red fabric, mustache made from animal hair, inserted animal teeth, plant fibre beard, package of magical mass and nail on the head, pierced around the rim , rep. (left horn), fissures, slight traces of abrasion, on base; the present mask type was mostly painted in red or coated with red fabric. The mask was completed by a head ornament with big leaves "bülä" and a chunky costume with a short plant fibre skirt. The "zakpäi" dancers only appeared in dry season and their sole function was to keep control of the cooking fires within the village, which is why they are even called "fire alarm" masks, or "running juju".

136 Seven miniature masks "ma go"

wood, dark brown patina, of oval form, min. dam., slight traces of abrasion; these miniature masks are called "ma go ", which means "little head". On travels they act as a substitute for the big masks in representing the helping spirit.

wood, slightly encrusted dark brown patina, the face enclosed by a roof-like protruding forehead and tapering cheeks, min. dam., traces of insect caused damage (back), minor missing parts; important requisites of the mask figure were bundles of hooked branches, used to annoy the audience. According to the hooked branch "ka" the mask is called "kagle". All "kagle" mask figures have proper names, some are called "klua", according to the chimpanzee, others bare the name of some animal or a certain activity.

138 Mask with hinged jaw "gägon"

wood, black patina, with projecting articulated lower jaw covered with black and white fur, high domed forehead ornamented with three nails, the sides incised with narrow parallel bands, pierced around the rim, minor missing parts, slight traces of abrasion; the mask was completed by a high tapering cylindrical helmet with feathers, a skirt of grass fibres and blue-white cloth wrapped around the upper part of the body. According to Hans Himmelheber these mask type surely had educational purposes in former times but is nowadays only used for entertainment of the village people.

(handle), slight traces of abrasion and usage; occasionally the spoons were carved with cow or rams heads, giving a hint on the domestic animals, slaughtered at big festivities in order to provide an adequate meal for the guests.

140 Spoon "wa ke mia"

wood, brown patina, handle in form of a human head, min. dam., slight traces of usage; part of the belongings of a "wunkirle", a married highly esteemed woman of the village. The big spoons are signs of dignity, they were exclusively used for the ritual carrying of rice. The "wunkirle" had to prepare meals for feasts in the circumcision camps as well as on great days and for every visitor of the village. In order to meet this demand she needs a helping spirit, which is manifested in the big spoon "wa ke mia".
