363 Mask "gelede"
Nigeria, Yoruba
wood, polychrome paint, disc-shaped superstructure carved with an equestrian figure accompanied by four standing figures, rep. (base), min. dam., cracks, slight traces of abrasion; "gelede" is a cult in the southwestern Yorubaland which implores the fertility of the earth and the well-being of men. Annual celebrations are marked by elaborate dance performances, paired male and female masks worn by men who appear in rich textile costumes complete with wooden breasts.

Cameroon, Kirdi
leather, partly encrusted patina, with punched decorations, handle on the rear, min. dam., slight traces of usage; these leather shields are made out of cowhide, or out of the hides of elephants or buffalo, and are tapered off to the bottom. The burls and grooves are worked into the leather during the making of the shield. According to old accounts, these decorations were believed to deflect the weapons of the aggressor.

Cameroon, Mambila
light brown wood, blackish brown patina, red paint, depicted in the moment of barking, showing a kind of aggressive posture, with ducked head and alert projecting ears, min. dam., cracks, slight traces of abrasion; the Mambila believed in a Creator, whom they used to call "nama" or "chang". A cult only existed for family ancestors. Most of their figures are representations of the deceased. Aside they produced the well-known animal masks, protective objects and music instruments.

wood, brown patina, kept in two separate pockets of a leather bag (h: 11,5 cm) with plaited handle and attached metal tool, min. dam., minor missing parts; among the Namchi, unadorned dolls made by blacksmiths are young girl's playthings. When beads, bells and coins are added, however, the doll becomes a surrogate baby for a woman who is having difficulty in getting pregnant.

Cameroon, Tikar
wood, dark brown patina, pigment remains, long neck with a collar of inserted wooden plugs, face with raised contour and diadem-like disc-shaped headdress, min. dam., cracks, missing parts through insect caused damage, on wooden base; the Tikar first were explored by the Thorbecke expedition in 1911/12. Their art is very special, especially their life-sized headcrests with cuffs of plant fibres are unique within the Cameroon Grassfields.
