‚nkisi‘ figures from the Belgian colonial collection Louis Jean Sommereyns

published: 2012, October 31
It is not every day that a group of ‚nkisi‘ figures (lots 428 - 432) are located, all of which come for the first time to the African art market, they are all from the same area and stylistically can be attributed to the Kalebwe style. Two of the figures appear to have been produced in the same workshop and possibly could even come from the same carver (lots 428 and 429), which would be another fortunate coincidence. Similarities between the patinas and the paraphernalia that was used, suggest that the figures are from the same period and village.

They were discovered in the estate of the Belgian colonial collection Louis Jean Sommereyns more...

Best sale

published: 2012, March 19
The auction season 2012 has promisingly started for the auction house. Already in advance of the past 68th tribal art auction it became apparent that the spring auction would develop keen interest at collectors and dealers as well. Therefore, every last seat was taken in the sale room and correspondingly, a vast number of telephone bidders were looking forward to this auction.
The result: 56 per cent of all objects (512 lots) were sold, among others up to the eightfold of the start price.
In the overall result this is the best-selling auction since we have been involved with tribal art: we could attain an increase of 42 per cent compared with the strongest auction we have realized before the financial crises.

Fresh consignments from esteemed collections enrich the March sale, among them private collections from Germany and Switzerland, as from Emil Maetzel (Hamburg), Dr. Eduard Hess (Oberwil near Basel) and Werner Krauß (Coburg / Vienna).

Double auction at season’s end

Objects of high-quality and first-class provenance, such as Hans Himmelheber, Julius Konietzko, Ernst Heinrich, Hans Hess, Ladislas Segy, Maria Wyss and William Brill as well as objects of the internationally esteemed collectors and dealers, were consigned to the auction house.

But prior to tribal art, the auction starts with its special part 'wunderkammer' that is taking place for the third time and only once a year. Fascinating objects of curiosity and nature will be showcased. What they all have in common is their non-European origin. more...

Made the grade in 2010 - Invitation to consign now

published: 2011, January 12
2010 was a true exciting auction year - not at least in the tribal art market. Despite sales of high publicity and interest, a narrow market with lost of sales, closing of galleries or temporarily reductions of activities have been registered.

Not so with Zemanek-Münster. The tribal art specialist based in Würzburg has almost realized his result in the passed twelve months to the best-selling preceding years. However, for such a specialized house they keep an eye on general trends but also very sensitive. Besides these, Zemanek-Münster has not only reached but also cemented the target to be an integral part of the international tribal-art market.

For the next tribal art sales, scheduled for March 5 and May 28, the auction house is now open for consignments of ancient art from Africa, Oceania and for Pre-Columbian. Their expert David Zemanek (Master Ethnology) will provide you with a free estimate of your work at auction value.

New York: On-site consignments

published: 2010, December 7
With about € 4,500 for two small hair ornaments from the North Solomons, Bougainville Island, the factor 10 of the call price has been realized for this rare item. It was one of these results that were able to make an interesting performance of auction results in 2010 for Zemanek-Münster.

Far away from Brussels and Paris, the international markets for non-European art, away from the art spots Cologne and Munich, the auction house in Würzburg, northern Bavaria, became an essential and integral part of the international tribal art market over the past years. And despite external strong declines in sales elsewhere, and despite galleries and departements that have closed their activities temporarily, Zemanek-Münster is upbeat about the auction season.

Thus, scheduling and proceeding for the first auctions in 2011 has been already started. David Zemanek, expert on non-European art is cordially expecting your consignments to our next tribal art sale with old fine art from Africa and Oceania. From 14th to 21st of December he will be in New York therefore.
If you are interested in consigning or for an appraisal of your art objects, please feel free to contact us.

Private Collection Heinz Seeliger (lots 263 to 347)

published: 2010, November 8
Private collections have a particular charm, especially when they offer insight into something which is not usually made public. This is certainly the case with Prof. Seeliger’s collection. A strong presence

published: 2010, February 16
Without doubt, the fascination of African masks and sculptures arises from its extraordinary and remarkable expressiveness. However, its enhancement in value is a result of its old and documented provenance and – in the stroke of luck – due to stylistic attribution verified to an artist or his workshop.

Both items can be documented by the couple of ancestor figures from the Mangbetu, D.R. Congo (lot 353), made by DOPIA MOTOTO more...
