Unlike European Expressionism with its comparatively short heyday, "Cameroonian Expressionism", according to Pierre Harter in 'Arts Anciens du Cameroun', is not an artistic countermovement but “the result of long reflection”. The consistency of this style can hardly be better illustrated than in the Batcham masks from the Bandjoun school, as this buffalo mask, that has been published several times, shows.
It is just one impressive example in our forthcoming auction, in which we present works ranging from naturalism to expressionism, from concrete to abstract, from rare to classic. What unites them is the unimaginable freedom of artistic interpretation.
